Alice (Natalie Portman) loves Dan (Jude Law) and Dan loves Anna (Julia Roberts), who, unfortunately, just happens to be married to Larry (Clive Owen). And so it goes in “Closer,” the tale of two couples caught in a messy love quadrangle. Though Alice and Anna share some similarities—both are Americans living in London—and have similar tastes—they have the dashing Dan in common—they couldn’t be more different when it comes to fashion. Waiflike Alice is a stripper and her style is a bit bohemian. Her outfits are eclectic: even when she dresses up in a smashing strapless cocktail dress, she throws the look off by pairing it with some ankle boots. Costume designer Ann Roth imagined her as a backpacker living out of a suitcase: “Alice is a free spirit who can just pick up and go. She just needed a pair of pants and a couple of T-shirts.” Anna is a successful photographer, and though she and Larry are affluent, she’s a minimalist and her clothes are quite casual. Roth chose outfits that reflected Anna’s profession; Anna’s clothes are cleanly tailored and like her photographs, she is often in black and white—crisp cotton shirts with dark trousers, fitted jackets and long black coats.
